Confined Children

Confined childrren are children that have remained in the home with their caregivers, but have been confined to a solitary place for a period of time. Here are two case studies of confined children, Genie and the Naderi Twins.

Genie

Genie In 1970, a thirteen year old female child was found confined in her home. She had been locked in a room for over ten years. She was tied to a potty chair all day, and when she was not forgotten all together she was tied in a sleeping bag in an oversized crib at night. When she was discovered, she was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Los Angelos, California and given the name Genie. She weighed only 59 pounds and was 54 inches tall at age thirteen. She was not able to walk very well; she could not chew her own food and only made infantile noises no words. Many teams of psychologist, sociologists, speech pathologists, medical doctors, etc. were all on a team coined the Genie Team. They wanted to study Genie and help her, if possible, in resocialization. Genie was study, tested, and taken care of by her team for five years; this is when the grant money was no longer being given. In those five years Genie learned many words, she learned how to express her emotions, how to walk, chew and use the bathroom on her own. But through all of the scientists testing they were not able to say if Genie could have been reintroduced to the world and able to live on her own.

Zahra and Massoumeh Naderi

The Naderi twins In 1997 Iran, twelve year old twin girls were taken into care by social services because of the parent’s neglect. The girls were not able to speak, they could barely walk and they spoke to others only by whimpers. The girls had not been bathed in many years and were at a mental age of only two years old. The girls were placed in a foster home, which they are currently still living in. The girls are being taught to read and write and are currently recieveing top honors in their third grade class, they are now nineteen years old. They both have wishes to continue through college and become succesful.
